Our fertility experts explain the benefits of PGT-A
Advanced reproductive technology allows the team at our Southern California fertility center to offer our patients state-of-the-art fertility treatment. This includes genetic testing. Our doctors want to prevent the transfer of genetically abnormal embryos. Doing so increases the likelihood that our patients will get pregnant, stay pregnant and deliver a healthy baby. One method we use for genetic testing is PGT-A, or preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy.
PGT-A can identify which embryos are chromosomally normal
A human embryo should have 23 pairs of chromosomes, or 46 chromosomes in total. When an embryo doesn’t have this number of chromosomes, it can cause issues that range from miscarriage to birth defects.
With preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy, we gently remove a few cells from the outer layer of each embryo. A laboratory professional then counts the chromosomes from each one. After the analysis, our physicians will then transfer only chromosomally normal embryos to the womb.
Should you consider PGT-A?
This type of genetic testing can help anyone who wants to increase their chance of bringing home a healthy baby. Our data shows that in all age groups over 30, pregnancy rates increase when using this technique. At our Southern California fertility center, our doctors may recommend genetic testing with PGT-A in the following situations.
- History of multiple miscarriages or IVF cycle failure
- Concerns about birth defects due to chromosomal abnormalities
- Desire to improve the chance of IVF success
For women and couples who have experienced multiple miscarriages, this test may hold the key to unlock the mystery of their infertility, once and for all. Because chromosomally normal embryos have a better chance of implanting and resulting in successful outcomes, this technique also makes it possible to achieve excellent pregnancy rates with single embryo transfer. This reduces the odds of a high-risk twin or triplet pregnancy.
Advanced genetic testing allows patients to proceed with confidence
We strive to help our patients create and build the families they desire. By using preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy, your doctor will transfer only genetically normal embryos, increasing the chance of having a healthy baby.
