Lesbian Fertility Testing

Lesbian fertility testing allows women to take the first step towards motherhood

Our Southern California fertility doctors are proud to support the LGBTQ community by providing family building services. Before our team can design a customized treatment plan for lesbian family building, it’s important to learn more about your fertility. This is where lesbian fertility testing can help. This process involves the same fertility tests that heterosexual women receive at our clinic. The only difference is that you and your partner may undergo this testing together.

A consultation is the first step on the path to motherhood

To start your lesbian family building journey, you will meet with Robert Anderson MD or Don Royster MD for a consultation. During this first appointment, your doctor will ask about your medical and family medical history. You can also expect to review your menstrual cycle and any past pregnancies or fertility treatments.

It’s also important to discuss how you and your partner want to be involved in the treatment process. For example, does one of you want to provide the eggs for the pregnancy, while the other carries and delivers the baby?

Keep in mind that lesbian fertility testing can help you determine who will play which role in the process. The woman with the better egg quality and quantity will be the one who should provide her eggs. Also, the woman who has a healthy uterus should carry the pregnancy.

Several assessments are part of routine lesbian fertility testing

Talking with our Southern California fertility doctors is just the first step. Your doctor will order a series of test to learn more about your hormones, egg supply (ovarian reserve) and reproductive organs.

  • Transvaginal ultrasound is a quick exam that allows your doctor to examine your uterus and ovaries. He will be looking for ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids and polyps.
  • Fertility bloodwork can provide vital information about your hormone levels and ovarian reserve. Our doctors commonly test follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH).
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a form of lesbian fertility testing that allows your doctor to determine whether you have any blockages in your fallopian tubes and a normal uterine cavity to carry a pregnancy.

Your doctor may also order other fertility tests depending on your unique needs. After completing test for you and your partner, you will return to our clinic to discuss the results. Your doctor will also start working with you to develop a customized plan for lesbian family building.
