Fertility Insurance Coverage and Benefits Programs

Understanding your fertility insurance coverage can be daunting, but by breaking it down into manageable steps, you can simplify the process. The good news is that with California’s mandated insurance coverage for fertility care, most health insurance plans in California are required to cover testing and treatment.

6 Tips for Understanding Fertility Insurance Coverage

  • It is important to confirm what your specific policy will cover, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI), or egg freezing. Be sure to look for specific terms like "assisted reproductive technology (ART)" or "infertility treatment".

  • Once you've confirmed coverage, identify any limitations or restrictions. These may include lifetime maximum benefits, dollar limits, or prerequisites like trying less invasive treatments before moving to IVF. Be aware of exclusions like donor eggs, sperm, or surrogacy, which may not be included in your plan.

  • Confirm that SCCRM is in-network to maximize coverage and minimize out-of-pocket costs.

  • Check if pre-authorization is required for certain treatments and work with your care team to submit the necessary documentation to your insurance provider.

  • Don't overlook fertility medications, which can be expensive. Ensure they are covered under your prescription plan and find out if there are specific pharmacies you need to use.

  • Finally, never hesitate to contact your insurance provider directly. They can offer detailed information about your coverage, clarify what's included or excluded, and guide you on how to optimize your benefits.
