Dr. Schiewe has prided himself on having a diverse working knowledge of ART’s and effectively applying them to numerous domestic/laboratory species and a wide variety of captive and free-ranging wildlife (>30 species). His extensive work in the 1980’s included research projects in Africa and Asia, and involved pioneering efforts in embryo toxicology, embryo freezing & vitrification, laparoscopic embryo transfer and blastocyst reconstruction/placental donation. In 1992, he extended his expertise into the biomedical field of Human Embryology where he co-published 8 peer-reviewed manuscripts by 1996 on the topics ICSI, embryo biopsy, oocyte freezing, laser hatching and embryo culture/blastocyst hatching mechanisms.

Nancy Nugent, BS, MS Laboratory Supervisor Nancy is the Lab Supervisor of the SCIRS ART laboratory and is extremely talented in micromanipulation procedures and meticulous laboratory record keeping. She received her BS in Molecular Biology & Genetics and her MS in Reproductive Physiology at University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Upon graduation (1993), Nancy was recruited by Dr. Schiewe to conduct research at UC Irvine on blastocyst hatching mechanisms, laser assisted hatching and ICSI.
She has trained many embryologists in these techniques and is internationally known for her expertise. Nancy has been invited to perform these procedures for ART clinics in Italy, Mexico, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. She has been with SCCRM since October 1997. At home, Nancy and her husband enjoy water sports and supporting the athletic endeavors of their two daughters.
Shane Zozula, BS, TS (ABB) Technical Supervisor Shane is a Senior Embryologist who joined SCCRM/SCIRS Lab in July of 2002 after nine years at a private IVF program in Washington. He received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Puget Sound and is experienced in all Embryology/Andrology techniques offered at SCIRS/SCCRM. Shane passed his Board exams in 2009 to become a certified Technical Supervisor.
When he’s not working in the SCIRS lab or presenting our research at national conferences, Shane enjoys traveling to tropical destinations with his wife and spending time with their four-legged child, Scarlett, a King Charles Cavalier.
John Whitney, BS Embryologist John joined SCCRM in 2011 as a Senior Embryologist with over 5 years of experience. He received his B.S. in Animal Science from California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo. John was instrumental in developing our blastocyst biopsy program and enjoys contributing to ongoing research & scientific publications. John resides in the OC Foothills, loves animals and regularly competes with his American Quarter Horses.
Elizabeth Baer, BS Laboratory Technician Elizabeth has specialty training in Molecular Biology and has worked at the National Human Genome Research Center as a Senior Research Associate involving the sequencing of human chromosome #5. She has also served as the Senior Molecular Genetics technician at the Molecular Genetics Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory at Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Elizabeth brings a wealth of experience to this laboratory that is directly applicable to the area of Andrology and Genetics. She has been a member of our staff since April 2001.
Lisa Gamboa Embryologist Lisa joined SCCRM in 2013 after graduating from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo with her B.S in Animal Science. Her unique hands-on undergraduate embryology experience at both Cal Poly and Colorado State University, has made Lisa an asset to the IVF Laboratory. During her free time, Lisa enjoys riding her horse and spending time with family and friends.
