Male infertility testing leads to treatment
When couples have trouble getting pregnant, there’s often a male factor involved. In fact, up to 40% of all cases of infertility are due to a male factor or a combination of male and female factors. Male infertility testing provides half of the picture of a couple’s overall fertility, helping solve the mystery of infertility to help men and women become mothers and fathers.
Male infertility testing: semen analysis
A semen analysis is typically the first test for men seeking answers about their fertility. It gives our Orange County fertility center detailed information about your sperm, helping to pinpoint whether any male factor infertility issues exist and how to treat them.
For this simple laboratory test, the man provides a semen sample through masturbation, which is then examined by experienced andrologists who evaluate multiple measures of sperm quantity, morphology (shape) and movement.
For men who aren’t trying to conceive a child, but just want to know more about their own fertility, semen analysis is available without a doctor’s order, directly from our Ovation Fertility laboratory. A physician may be needed to interpret your results.
Semen analysis is performed by appointment only at our lab in Newport Beach, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. To schedule your test, please call (949) 642-5954. Results are ready for your review in four to five days.
Other male infertility tests
If your semen analysis produces abnormal results, your fertility specialist may order further testing or refer you to a urologist specializing in male infertility.
- Repeat semen analysis
- Blood work to assess hormone levels
- Immunological testing
- Sperm function testing
One advanced sperm function test is the sperm penetration assay, which evaluates whether the man’s sperm is capable of joining with an egg. For this test, sperm are combined in the laboratory with hamster eggs that have been stripped of their outer shell-like covering, or zona pellucida. Human sperm can easily penetrate such eggs, and no embryo will develop.
In a normal sperm penetration assay, more than 20% of eggs are penetrated, or six penetrations occur per egg. Lower numbers may indicate problems with the sperm’s fertilization potential.
The sperm penetration assay is performed by appointment only at our lab in Newport Beach, Mondays and Tuesdays between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. To schedule a test, please call (949) 642-5954. Results are available within seven days.
Get tested, get treated
Male infertility testing can help men and couples find the answers they need, while helping the fertility specialist plan a course of treatment that is most likely to achieve pregnancy quickly and cost-effectively.
If advanced treatment is necessary to overcome male factor infertility, your fertility specialist may recommend intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). In cases in which very few sperm are present in the semen, sperm retrieval may still provide a path to fatherhood.
